To "Student"

I'm tired.

I'm tired of chasing, hounding, and pestering you to do your work.
I'm tired of playing the "Where are my boundaries?" game.
I'm tired of putting you first.

I'm tired of working to keep one step ahead of you - one step ahead of your expectations, one step ahead of your attention span, one step ahead of your tricks.
I'm tired of shutting my eyes tightly, wishing you to be my friend.
I'm tired of acting like I know what I'm doing, tired of being in charge, tired of giving assignments rather than receiving them.
I'm tired of doing my best, while you, well, don't.

But then,
you surprise me with a thank you, a smile, a laugh, a personal chat.
You show appreciation.
You knock me off the high horse of self-pity.

Thank you.

Jesus has given you to me. YOU are my assignment.

This... this is what it means to be a teacher.
